We have a weekly Canasta group on a Tuesday 10am to 12pm all are welcome
Canasta is a partnership card game played by four players in two teams using two standard decks of cards (including Jokers). The objective is for a team to be the first to reach 5,000 points by forming melds of cards with the same rank, especially Canastas.
Objective
The goal is to score points by creating melds (sets of cards of the same rank) and especially Canastas, which are melds containing seven cards of the same rank.
Basic Gameplay
Teams: Two partnerships of two players sit opposite each other.
Draw: On a turn, a player draws a card either from the draw pile or by picking up the discard pile (if rules allow).
Meld: Players can lay down sets of three or more cards of the same rank on the table.
Discard: Each turn ends by discarding one card to the discard pile.
Canastas
A Canasta is a meld of seven cards of the same rank. There are two main types:
Natural Canasta: Seven cards of the same rank without wild cards.
Mixed Canasta: Includes wild cards.
Special Cards
Wild Cards: Jokers and 2s can substitute for any card when forming melds.
Red Threes: Usually give bonus points but must be laid down immediately and replaced with another card from the draw pile.
Black Threes: Act as blocking cards and cannot normally be used in melds.
Picking Up the Discard Pile
Players can take the entire discard pile if they can immediately use the top card to form or add to a meld with matching cards in their hand.
Going Out
A player may go out by playing all the cards in their hand (after their team has made at least one Canasta), ending the round.
Scoring
Points are awarded for:
Cards in melds
Completed Canastas
Bonuses (such as red threes)
Points are deducted for cards left in players’ hands.
The game continues over several rounds until a team reaches 5,000 points, winning the game.
